Additive Manufacturing Powder Tester
Mechanical Engineer

The Task:

  • Create a powder bed tester that will simulate the moving of powder across a bed as is done in 3D metal printing

  • Actuate a sensor to determine surface morphology

  • Create a bed that can record changes in pressure so impact testing can be preformed on the powder to determine how forces move through the material

  • Design a mechanism that tilts the bed at controlled angles to determine how the 

  • Write design substantiation and present to a review committee

Project Currently:

  • The project is currently in the design phase, it will be machined, assembled, and testing will be completed by the end of April.

My Role:

  • Design a roller mechanism that distributes powder evenly across the bed to simulate a direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) printer

  • Actuate the powder plates to simulate the movement of a DMLS printer

  • Design a removable mechanism that will drop a metal ball on the powder bed for impact testing

  • Machine and build the test bed

  • Test the machine to verify that it works as intended
